When people think of gossip they automatically think of celebrities. The rumors or stories created about these individuals is uncanny. Magazines and tabloids help to spread these rumors about celebrities and make for good entertainment. In many ways stories published in gossip columns are the way in which these celebrities get exposure. The buzz that erupts after such stories provides the “normal” people of the world with a fantasy to think about in there minds. Also, these types of stories make individuals seem extremely close to the world of Hollywood, and seem as if “normal” people know the stars personally.

The gossip in these magazines like anything else, has to be thought of as hearsay. This is so because some of the stories are true and some of the stories are made up. Although there is some level of truth to every story, sometimes reporters will make up rumors based on a hunch or an assumption. These situations can occur out of boredom or just pure desperation. Gossip regarding famous people occurs everyday in many different places in the country. Some talk about it in magazines, television, at the dinner table, in the car, out for drinks, in the beauty salon , etc… The list of places that rumors can swirl and be misconstrued can include anything. In the situation of the celebrity, gossip can be both beneficial and detrimental to their careers. Contrary to popular belief, some rumors can be positive stories that engage the world in a very beneficial way for the celebrity. For example, when a star is about to have a birthday, get married, start an important project, or donate to charity, the stories will be ones that can accelerate their career to the next level.

When people think of gossip, they also correlate it to childhood, or adolescence. This time period for many people, the school days through to high school, are usually very tough for people. Starting rumors during these years is what young people participate in to survive. They are so interested in what everyone is doing and who they are doing it with. The adolescent stage is one that relies on trends, social status, popularity, and actions. The bullies of the world thrive in this time, and get to spread rumors and pick on innocent kids they may be easy targets. The youth that gets it the worst are the ones with less money than most, an awkward personality, or nerds. These people are easy targets in their early years and sometimes get scared for life. Sometimes however, the children that may be pretty but not popular, new at school, or someone that others are envious of are talked about often. In the adolescent years, gossip can be both positive and negative, depending on where someone falls into the flow of the area in which they live. Low self esteem contributes greatly to this trend, and can be a very dark time for some.

When people think of gossip often also think of a typical day in their lives. Rumors are spread on a daily basis by many people both normal and famous, and can be spread at anytime. Sometimes people are so obsessed with others that they rarely have time for themselves. Grown people that are established and well off even still gossip. People gossip about their neighbors and friends all the time.

Sometimes no matter how old a person gets, they are still very insecure and unstable causing them to compare themselves to others and out them down in the process. Placing oneself on a pedestal and placing others beneath, is a tactic used just to make a person feel better. This doesn’t do anything positive for that individual and it doesn’t make a relationship stronger. What it does is the opposite and ruins the relationships and creates a barrier of communication. Often, when rumors are started, they are regarded as “haters” or jealous people. People can gossip because they want what a person has or can’t stand that someone has advanced over them. In the work place this happens all the time, especially when two or more individuals are competing for the same position, and get beaten. An employee may feel that they deserved a promotion over another, or even something as simple as praise over another person. On the contrary, an employee may spread rumors about an employee that didn’t get a promotion over them and who they may feel is now beneath them. This often happens when the situation was highly competitive or dragged out for a prolonged period of time.

Competition can overtake individuals and rumors get started to make the situation less about the individual and more about the process itself. Employees often gossip about the workplace as a whole, and talk about how much they may hate or love a given situation. This is often a way for employees to bond over drinks, or dinner outside of the workplace. Often when there is a common interest, there is a bond that forms in and out of the work place. Rumors are often spread or shared in these situations and opinions of others are formed, both good and bad. Now, while these experiences can result in a newly formed bond, they can also result into tension in the workplace. In this given situation a situation has been created because of meaningless gossip. A big rumor filled conversation will usually take place in regards to the boss or manager of a specific job. These people have it the worst because they are the enforcers who can quickly be judged by those they are delegating to. The scrutiny endured during a position of authority usually comes from those underneath. Employees gossip about the things that a boss does wrong, and also what they don’t do at all. There is almost a sense in many cases, that the person being delegated to may have a sense of jealousy that even they don’t see initially. People always feel that they can do a better job doing well, another persons job.

The truth is whether normal, famous, young, old, insecure, or secure with who one is, people will always spread rumors. Everyone always gets gossiped about. Friends gossip about friends, and enemies of enemies. Normal people gossip about famous people, and famous people about other famous people. Families gossip within their own family and also outside of it. Rumors ruin relationships, and start fights that are unnecessary. This happens when something is said but then gets misconstrued into a bigger story that may be more extreme or less true. This often pins people against one another and creates turmoil. Sometimes they bring about change that was needed in the first place. For example, a toxic person in the life of another that is gossiping about them and sabotaging relationships with others is definitely not someone that should remain consistent in that persons life. The only way some people find this out is after they hear rumors being spread about them by that person.
